I made over $13,000 freelancing on Upwork in less than 7 months and this is how you can do it. Step by step guide to earning your first $1k on Upwork.

I am not writing this post to show off or toot my horn. In fact, I am not an income report enthusiast. I am only writing this to drive one point home–you can make a decent income off Upwork.

You see, before I joined Upwork as a freelancer, I came across posts and bloggers who were strongly against freelancing platforms like Upwork.

But, one thing I am good at, is doing what people say I shouldn’t. I don’t like being told not to try or put an effort. I don’t like giving up before trying.

After reading so many reasons why anyone looking to start a career shouldn’t use content mills like Upwork or Fiverr, I went right ahead to create an account. The results were tremendous for me. I made money, cleared off debts, paid bills and discovered so many opportunities online.

Need proof? Here is a picture showing the total amount of money I was able to earn.

I wasn’t an expert. I wasn’t good with WordPress, and I couldn’t even construct a proper sentence. Nevertheless, I was determined to try because I had also read success stories of people making a decent living off Upwork.

Update; I have had over 65 people sign up and gotten messages from people who wanted more details to what I did on Upwork

What I Did Next

My sister( who was already working on the platform at that time) opened an account for me on Upwork and set up my profile. She gave me the login details and said

“Don’t be disappointed if you don’t get any job in the first week. Upwork is very competitive.”

I nodded, logged into the account and started applying for jobs. My first few weeks on Upwork weren’t great. In fact, the first job I had paid 10$ for a 5000 words article  (yes, I accepted that kind of work)  As I was new to the site, I wanted to get as many jobs as I could lay my hands on.

After my 10$ job that centered around baby poop, I got a $29 job to search for Nail art on Pinterest. At the rate I was going, I would have had to write over 10,000 words to make my first $100.

I didn’t want to waste time and energy hopping from one low paying job to another so I began Googling tips on how to succeed at freelancing. I took a course on Udemy, but it didn’t make any difference.

I came across a post on this website and signed up for a free email course on freelancing.  Although the content was tailored for those who wanted to start a freelancing business outside platforms like Upwork or Fiverr, I combined everything I learned and put it into my Upwork profile.

The three things I did that boosted my profile were things I learned from her course. After a week, I landed a $500 weekly writing gig. Things became easy for me from that point as I started landing more high paying jobs. The course I took paid for itself in less than a week.

The best part of everything was this; I became a Top Rated Freelancer. Being a Top Rated Freelancer meant I had made $1000 in a year and had a job success score of 90%.

Getting the Top Rated badge on my profile was fantastic. I kept getting job invitations daily, and it was up to me to choose the client I wanted to work with.

I went from settling for less to turning down clients who couldn’t afford my rates. My success on Upwork was unbelievable to me on most days.

There was a whole lot that I did to get to the level I did on Upwork. I prayed, tithed, read useful materials, and took the right course. Throughout my stay on Upwork, I never went a week without having a job.

Can You Achieve This Much On Upwork?

I have read a lot of articles online that advises against using content mills like Upwork and Fiverr. The people who write these articles frown at the little pay offered to freelancers on those sites. I took a freelancing course that was against using sites like Upwork and I was able to apply the lessons and make a decent income off Upwork.

Once you take a look at the jobs posted on Upwork, you would see a lot of clients offering $5 for an article of 500 words. You would also see some high paying jobs. I have written 1500 words article for $100 on Upwork. So, yes, you can use Upwork to make a pretty decent income.

You can make as much money as I made and even more. You should, however, know that Upwork, like every other online business, is not a get rich quick scheme. If you want to see results, you have to put in some efforts.

What is Upwork?

Upwork is a freelancing platform that connects freelancers with potential clients. Every day, job offers are posted, and interested freelancers submit a proposal in hopes of getting the job.  Making a decent income from freelance marketplaces is possible. Becoming successful is easy on Upwork, but you have to be ready to put in the work. I remember staying up late on most nights. I remember working with clients who were too difficult to please and I also remember getting a couple of nasty reviews that made me question my capabilities as a writer.

After signing up, you should proceed to set up your profile and adding a good profile introduction. Your cover letter is the first thing your clients read once they open up your profile. You will want to craft something enticing and professional.

I consider the profile like the receptionist of an office. It is your chance to create a lasting impression and snag up good paying clients. When I got into Upwork, my profile was generic and contained a lot of fluff, as time went on, I niched down and made a few adjustment.
